"Prophetic Sisterhood" this October
On Sunday, October 15, 2017, at our new location in Coralville, IA, the Iowa City Unitarian Universalist Society will host a workshop focusing on the role of women in liberal religion, and featuring author Cynthia Grant Tucker.
Dr. Tucker’s Prophetic Sisterhood: Liberal Women Ministers of the Frontier illuminated the struggles of early Unitarian women ministers. Building on this, the workshop -- “Prophetic Sisterhood: Now More Than Ever” -- will examine the ways that UU women worked to raise feminine consciousness in the past, and whether they still advance a meaningful feminism today. How have women’s roles changed? How did misogyny hamper women's ministries, lay and ordained, and how did they handle it? How do the UUA, theological schools, and similar institutions address women’s interests today? This workshop will focus on taking stock of how far we have come -- and how far we have yet to go as we shape our mission and define our challenges here in the 21st century.
Dr. Tucker’s Sunday sermon on the morning of October 15 will be followed by a luncheon, with the workshop immediately after. Registration will be required. To learn more, please visit “Prophetic Sisterhood” at http://www.uusic.org/prophetic-sisterhood.
